Guides on 4x4 News are the long room. Hubs tell you which door. Guides sit you down with the agency names, the instrument you are holding, the safety notes already published on visiting-safely pages, and the list of things we will not invent so a search snippet does not become a fake fee.
They are written to be quoted. They are not written to replace a booking site.
Start with a place (K’gari, Simpson, Cape York, High Country, Gibb, Tasmania) or with a skill (planning, permits, recovery, vehicle prep). If a heritage /posts/ URL brought you here, that is deliberate: the overnight stubs 301 to the guide that should have existed, without the invented tow chart.
Read the official source list at the bottom of each piece before you pack.
Destination shelf
- K’gari / Fraser Island — Queensland Parks recreation-area rules, beach driving, inland tracks.
- Simpson Desert / Munga-Thirri — SA Desert Parks Pass plus the Queensland camping side.
- Cape York — QPWS camping, NPARC ferry, Traditional Owner and park pages.
- Victorian High Country — seasonal closures and changed conditions.
- Gibb River Road — Main Roads, DBCA, Uunguu.
- Tasmania 4WD — Arthur-Pieman Recreational Driver Pass.
Skills shelf
The destinations hub is the map of the first set. Touring, permits, safety and gear are the doorways to the second.
A guide on this desk always does four things: names the manager, names the instrument, quotes the visiting-safely idea that already exists on an official page, and lists what we refuse to invent. If a piece cannot do those four, it is a blog essay or it is not ready.
Overnight /posts/ URLs 301 here or to the matching guide. That is the entire relationship with the scaffold.
On this desk
- Cape York 4WD — parks, the bypass, and a council ferry
Northern Cape York is QPWS parks with 4WD-only access, camping bookings, and a Jardine River crossing run by Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council — not a parks ticket.
- Gibb River Road 4WD — a public road with parks on the spurs
The Gibb is Main Roads. The gorges are DBCA. Mitchell Falls is a Uunguu Visitor Pass. Wet-season closures are climate plus gates, not a vibe.
- K’gari (Fraser Island) 4WD — permits, tides and road rules
A Queensland recreation-area trip: vehicle access permit, camping permit, beach driving as ordinary road rules, and tides that QPWS already told you to respect.
- Permits and park rules — the instruments, not the stickers
A long walk through VAPs, Desert Parks Passes, seasonal closures, DBCA e-passes, Uunguu, and Tasmania’s driver pass, with the official URLs and without a fee table.
- Plan a multi-day 4WD trip — constraints first, scenery second
A worked sequence for Australian touring: place, jurisdictions, instruments, BOM, roads, self-sufficiency, vehicle masses, then notes. No fake day-by-day kilometre chart.
- Recovery kit and 4WD safety — rated to rated, then stop
A recovery is a matching problem and a road-rule problem. This page replaces the overnight “recovery kit minimums” stub without inventing a kilonewton.
- Simpson Desert / Munga-Thirri — three jurisdictions, two park systems
A desert crossing is not one park. South Australia’s Desert Parks Pass, Queensland camping bookings, NT Parks, the Desert Parks Bulletin, and BOM heat and flood products are the stack.
- Tasmania 4WD — Arthur-Pieman is a driver pass, not a Parks Pass
Parks Tasmania’s Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area lets 2WD vehicles use arterial roads. Designated recreational tracks and beaches need a Recreational Driver Pass, a registered vehicle, and the mapped lines.
- Vehicle prep and touring gear — read the plates first
GVM, GCM, tyre placards and recovery-point documents are the prep. Everything else is preference. This page 301s the old tow-ratings stub on purpose.
- Victorian High Country 4WD — seasonal closures are the plan
Parks Victoria and DEECA close alpine roads so the tracks still exist in summer. The window is published. The live list can be harsher.
Questions the desk answers first
How do internal guides connect?+
Destination guides sit beside permit, recovery and planning guides. The destinations hub is the map; this index is the shelf; each guide names the agency pages that still win if we go stale.
Official sources
Fees, opening hours and closures belong on the issuing site. We cite the page; we do not copy a price list.

4x4 News is built for posting: news notes, track guides, blog essays and guest copy. We will not invent a headline to fill the gap. If you have a sourced field note, send the outline.
