Desk method

Reviewed 17 October 2026

Verify before you travel. Permits, closures, tides, fire bans and track conditions change. Confirm with the parks agency, the state transport site, and the Bureau of Meteorology. This desk does not publish live availability, prices, or invented events.

4x4 News is an independent Australian 4WD news and touring-education site. The domain is old. The usable Wayback archive is not. CDX for 4x4news.com.au collapses to a homepage parking frame, a blank later homepage, a robots.txt that was HTML, and a favicon that was also HTML. There was nothing honest to clone, so we did not clone it. We kept the name, kept the homepage path, and built a posting desk that can stand next to a parks.gov.au page without flinching.

What we publish

Four rooms, on purpose:

  • News — evergreen desk notes on how to check conditions, alerts and weather. Not a fake wire feed.
  • Guides — long-form destination and skills pieces with official sources.
  • Blog — how the desk thinks: citing, guest editing, what we will not rank.
  • Guest posts — field notes from other people, edited, attributed, never auto-published.

Keystatic is the CMS. If you arrived looking for a comments widget and a classifieds board, you are in the wrong decade. If you arrived looking for the permit sentence, you are in the right room.

Independence

We are not a manufacturer, a tour operator, a parks agency, or a tyre shop with a magazine skin. Trademarks belong to their owners. When we say K’gari, Simpson, High Country, Gibb or Arthur-Pieman, we mean the places on the official maps, not a branded experience we sell.

We do not take a cut of your Desert Parks Pass. We also do not scrape a fee table into this CMS so we can look “complete”. Completeness that goes stale is a lie.

Sourcing standard

Cite primary pages: Queensland Parks (QPWS / DETSI), NSW NPWS, Parks Victoria, SA National Parks and Wildlife Service, DBCA, NT Parks, Parks Tasmania, state transport agencies, and the Bureau of Meteorology. Traditional Owner visitor-pass pages (for example Uunguu) are primary for the country they describe.

If a number is not on those pages, it does not appear here as a fact. That includes vehicle specs, winch ratings, tow figures, ferry fares, camping fees, and “the track is open this weekend”.

How freshness works

Each major page has a reviewed date. That date means a human looked at the structure and the citations. It does not mean the Simpson is open. For that you want the Desert Parks Bulletin and the Queensland park alert, on the day.

When an official URL moves (Queensland’s parks host has travelled across department skins), we update the citation. If you find a dead link, use contact and mark the topic as a correction.

People

This is a small desk. We will not invent a masthead of experts to look like a metropolitan masthead. Guest writers will be named when a guest piece runs. Staff opinion pieces in the blog are labelled as method, not as a secret test of your dual-cab.

Heritage paths

/ is the homepage. /news/ was already the news room in an overnight scaffold and stays the news room. /contact/ and /guest-post/ stay. Overnight stubs at /reviews/, /events/ and /posts/ 301 to gear, news and guides. That is the entire romance with the past.

If you want the myth of a 2005 magazine, it is not here. If you want a site that will tell you to read Parks Victoria before you pack the High Country, it is.

Why a “news” domain is mostly guides

The name 4x4 News is an EMD: people type it when they want Australian off-road information. The honest product for that query, given a parking-page archive, is education with citations — not a fake newspaper. The news desk still exists. It publishes the conditions stack, the alert-reading note, the BOM note, and the permit roundup. When a manufacturer actually launches something, they have a website. When a park closes, they have an alert. We will not launder either without a primary URL, and we will not invent a third thing to look busy.

That stance is how this site stays quotable in AI overviews and in a glovebox. A hallucinated fee is worse than a quiet homepage.

Who this is for

Travellers who will read a visiting-safely page. Guest writers who can name their sources. People who want a heritage domain to resolve to real content instead of a frameset. It is not for people who want us to rank dual-cabs, bless a tyre pressure, or tell them Blue Rag is open this Saturday.

If you are a parks officer or a Traditional Owner reading a sentence that should be sharper, use contact. We would rather correct a citation than defend a vibe.

How posting works

Keystatic collections on disk: pages, guides, news, blog, guest posts. Nothing auto-publishes from the web form. The form is FormSubmit to the fleet inbox. We do not run comments. We do not run classifieds. We do not run a shop.

Internal links are part of the product. A destination guide should send you to permits, safety, and the conditions explainer. If a room feels like a dead end, that is a bug — tell us.

Disclaimer, again

General information. Not legal, mechanical, or trip-planning advice. Trademarks belong to manufacturers, event organisers, and agencies. Unauthorised reproduction is prohibited. The footer repeats this on every page because that is the fleet rule, and because 4WD content is one lawsuit away from a made-up spec.

Reviewed dates are on the pages. Live conditions are on the agencies. That split is the whole about page.

Questions the desk answers first

Is information kept up to date?+

Editorial pages are reviewed and dated. Permits, fees, ferry hours and closures are kept up to date on the issuing sites, which we cite. Treat those as live; treat us as explanation.

How does 4x4news help readers?+

By naming the agency, the instrument, and the weather/roads products to check, and by refusing invented specs, prices and news events.

Official sources

Fees, opening hours and closures belong on the issuing site. We cite the page; we do not copy a price list.

4x4 News is built for posting: news notes, track guides, blog essays and guest copy. We will not invent a headline to fill the gap. If you have a sourced field note, send the outline.
