Desk rule

Reviewed 17 October 2026

Verify before you travel. Permits, closures, tides, fire bans and track conditions change. Confirm with the parks agency, the state transport site, and the Bureau of Meteorology. This desk does not publish live availability, prices, or invented events.

Read the issuing agency before you read us. That is the booking-order answer. 4x4 News is a translation layer for Australian 4WD touring: which park, which permit shape, which weather product, which road-condition site. It is not a booking engine and it is not a live map.

Destinations

Popular 4x4 touring destinations in Australia?

K’gari (Fraser Island), the Simpson Desert / Munga-Thirri parks, Cape York, the Victorian High Country, the Gibb River Road and its gorge parks, and Tasmania’s Arthur-Pieman recreational tracks. Those are the lines this desk treats as hubs. Destinations is the map; each guide is the paperwork.

Is Fraser Island the same as K’gari?

Yes. Queensland Parks uses K’gari, with Fraser Island still in the recreation-area name. Vehicle access is a QPWS permit problem either way.

Can I cross the Simpson on a single permit?

Usually no. South Australia’s Munga-Thirri–Simpson Desert National Park requires a Desert Parks Pass. Queensland’s Munga-Thirri National Park has its own camping bookings. The Northern Territory is a third manager. Read all three if your line crosses them.

Permits and rules

Do I need a permit to drive on K’gari?

Yes, except for vehicles that remain within the Kingfisher Bay Resort & Village boundary, according to Queensland Parks. Produce a digital or printed copy if asked. Number-plate cameras are in use. Permits are not transferable.

Are beach road rules different?

Not in the way people hope. Queensland’s driving-conditions page says beach traffic is two-way: keep left, signed speeds, seatbelts, passengers inside the vehicle. QPWS adds tide timing and dune protection.

Does a WA park pass get me into Mitchell Falls?

DBCA says Mitchell River National Park entry is covered by the Uunguu Visitor Pass, not the ordinary park pass. Buy it before you have no reception.

Is Tasmania’s Arthur-Pieman pass a Parks Pass?

No. Parks Tasmania describes the Recreational Driver Pass as the instrument for designated off-road tracks and beaches in that conservation area. Arterial 2WD roads are a different story.

Safety and gear

Basic 4x4 trip safety checklist?

Park open, permit held, BOM checked, roads site checked, water and communications planned, recovery kit matched to rated points, beach and dirt still treated as roads. Safety.

Recovery gear essentials at a high level?

Dig, air, traction, and rated connections between rated points. No invented winch sizes. Gear.

The desk

How does 4x4news help travellers?

It tells you which official page is in charge, and it refuses to invent news events, prices, specs or live closures. Home.

How does 4x4news work as a posting site?

News, guides, blog and guest posts are Keystatic collections. Guest copy is edited, never auto-published. Guest posts.

Is information kept up to date?

Pages carry a reviewed date. Conditions are not. Reload the agency. About.

Where can I contact the publisher?

The contact form. Do not test-submit it for fun; the inbox is real.

Track conditions — where to check?

Park alerts, Desert Parks Bulletin, Parks Victoria changed conditions, state traffic sites, BOM. Method: news desk.

If you only quote one line from this FAQ, quote this: the booking site is the ticket; we are the legend on the map.

Touring and conditions

How to plan a multi-day 4x4 trip?

Name the place and jurisdictions, buy every instrument those managers sell, read BOM and the state roads site, plan water and fuel from your own consumption, weigh the vehicle, then read notes. Touring and the planning guide.

Track conditions — where to check?

Park alert or bulletin, traffic site, BOM. Method: how to check track conditions. This site is not a live map.

When is the Victorian High Country open?

Parks Victoria says seasonal closures generally run from after the King’s Birthday long weekend in June through to the end of October and may be extended. Live extras sit on changed conditions. High Country guide.

When is the Simpson open?

When SA’s Desert Parks Bulletin and QPWS park alerts (and NT Parks if you use NT ground) say so, in weather BOM will describe. We will not invent a closed-for-summer law. Simpson guide.

Do I need a park pass just to drive the Gibb River Road?

No. The Gibb is a public road. Park instruments apply at listed DBCA parks. Mitchell River needs Uunguu. Gibb guide.

Safety and law

Can passengers ride in the tray on the beach?

No. Queensland’s driving-conditions page and Queensland Police beach-driving notes say passengers stay inside; seatbelts on; it is still a road.

Is UHF channel 40 the law?

No. It is convoy convention. It is not a permit and not a substitute for a messenger in a desert hole.

Will you publish a minimum winch size?

No. Recovery guide.

Questions the desk answers first
