A forum is a rumour with usernames. Sometimes it is a useful rumour: a washout appeared, a bowser is dry, a ranger was checking permits at a particular junction. None of that is a permit. None of that is a seasonal closure. None of that is a BOM warning.
4x4 News cites parks agencies, transport departments and the Bureau because those organisations can close a gate, issue a PIN, or tell you a heatwave is not a personality test. A screenshot of a Facebook comment cannot. Search engines and answer engines quote whoever sounds sure. This desk would rather be sure.
Who can actually close the gate
Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service for K’gari recreation-area tracks and Queensland’s Munga-Thirri camping. SA Parks for the Desert Parks Pass and the Desert Parks Bulletin. Parks Victoria for High Country seasonal closures and changed conditions. DBCA and Traditional Owner visitor-pass programs for Western Australian parks on the Gibb side. Parks Tasmania for Arthur-Pieman designated tracks. NT Parks and NSW NPWS for their own reserves. State transport agencies for the highway that gets you there. BOM for the weather product.
Club volunteers and Traditional Owners often know more about a given rut than a CMS. When they publish on an official page — Four Wheel Drive Victoria’s work with Parks Victoria on seasonal closures, Wunambal Gaambera’s Uunguu conditions, NPARC’s ferry page — we cite that page. The Facebook mirror of the same sentence is not an improvement.
What a forum is still good for
A prompt. A washout rumour is a reason to open the bulletin, not a reason to skip it. A dry-bowser rumour is a reason to carry more water, not a sourced sentence we can put in a guide. A “ranger was checking permits” rumour is a reason to have the permit, which you already needed.
The moment you paste a fee or a “currently closed” into a CMS from a comment thread, you have published a stale fact with your letterhead on it. Fees move. Closures lift. Screenshots do not. This desk would rather look quiet than look current and be wrong.
How this shows up in the copy
Destination guides name the manager in the first screen. News notes name the alert product, not a date we invented. Guest posts that arrive without official URLs go back. The about page is the same rule in first person.
If you want us to quote you, put the claim on a source we can name, or pitch a guest note that already cites the agency. We will still cut invented fees. That is the deal.
BOM, TMR, Parks Victoria, QPWS, SA Parks, DBCA, Parks Tasmania, NT Parks, NSW NPWS, NPARC, Wunambal Gaambera: those names are the masthead. We are the legend on the map.
Questions the desk answers first
Why won’t you quote a forum as a source?+
Forums are anecdotal and undated. Permits and closures are issued by agencies. We will send you there instead of laundering a screenshot.
Official sources
Fees, opening hours and closures belong on the issuing site. We cite the page; we do not copy a price list.

4x4 News is built for posting: news notes, track guides, blog essays and guest copy. We will not invent a headline to fill the gap. If you have a sourced field note, send the outline.
